Extract of a Letter from Fort-Pitt, May 9, 1768.
I have now the Pleasure of informing you, that the important Congress, which has been held here, with about twelve Hundred Indians, (exclusive of women and Children) is satisfactorily concluded. Col. Croghan has been indefatigable; and never displayed his great Influence and Address with the Natives, more signally and successfully than at this Conference, as they met him with the strongest Prepossessions against us, on Account of the repeated and cruel Murders of their Relations, and the audacious Settlement of their Lands at Redstone Creek, &c. In my Opinion, the Province, in no Instance, ever incurred an Expence more seasonably, as it has effectually, for the present, composed the Minds of the Indians, and prevented an impending Rupture with them. If the Boundary is settled this Summer, and they are paid for their Cession to the Crown, and the Frontier Inhabitants will not again shamefully violate the Laws of Hospitality and good Faith with them, (which both Christianity and sound Policy forbid,) I am persuaded these Colonies will long enjoy the inestimable Blessings of Trade and Tranquility.

Event Details
Important congress held with about twelve hundred Indians (exclusive of women and children) satisfactorily concluded. Col. Croghan displayed great influence and address with the natives despite their strong prepossessions against settlers due to repeated and cruel murders of their relations and audacious settlement of their lands at Redstone Creek. The province's expense was seasonable, effectually composing the Indians' minds for the present.
