Demo. doctrine.
Whatever may be the merit or demerit of Gen Hull's conduct, many of the democrats and democratic papers express language and feelings towards him worthy a Baltimore Mob. If Gen. Hull has done any thing worthy of bonds or death, let him be tried by his peers in the manner pointed out by law. But this would not comport with either the honour or humanity of the War-Hawks. The Madisonians are resolved to make Hull the scape goat of the administration. We could fill columns with extracts from their papers in proof of this. To mention but one instance: The Raleigh Register gives the proceedings of what it calls a meeting of respectable Citizens at Greensborough, Guilford Co N C. where Gen. Hamilton was Chairman and J. L. Leseur was Secretary. The following Resolutions were unanimously adopted
"Resolved, That it is the opinion of this meeting that Brigadier Gen. Hull, in the surrender of Detroit, has acted like a traitor, and that he is guilty of high treason."
"Resolved, That an Effigy of Gen Hull be prepared and taken to the gallows and hanged, and then taken down and burnt to ashes. in manifestation of the indignation which this meeting feel at his conduct."
which was accordingly done
JOHN HAMILTON, chairman.
John L. Leseur, Sec'ry
Such proceedings as the above are a disgrace to a Country which pretends to have a government of laws.
