GOT A BENDER.—The "Journal of Civilization" publishes what purports to be a photograph of the senior male member of the atrocious Bender family. The countenance represented is as diabolical in appearance as are the deeds which have made the name of Bender a sound of horror even to ordinary murderers; yet for the reasons, most probably, that the Benders are not Irish Catholics—the "Journal of Civilization" refrains from comment, concerning the party arrested. There is nothing to be found in the history of crime in this country, which, for cold-blooded cruelty, treachery and cowardice, can be compared to the revolting and horrible series of murders committed by that family of Kansas devils; and if they had been committed by Patrick O'Shane, who is an Irishman and mayhap a Catholic, the "Journal of Civilization" would have foamed for months with obscene and slanderous caricature illustrations, and billingsgate editorial denunciations of the whole Irish race. But inasmuch as the murderers stubbornly and maliciously refuse to be Irish, at all, the guns of the Journal of Civilization are spiked. It has no word of encouragement for the officers—no word of condemnation for the arch murderer. We are glad, however, to be permitted to hope that justice will be finally meted out to one of the demoniac wretches, if not to all.
