A Relic of the Past.—From an ancient number of the New Orleans Courier, published in 1810 the following notice of the fall of De Grandpré in defence of Fort Baton Rouge, is taken. There are many of our citizens who, 'ripe in years,' have been spared the wreck of time; and may look back upon the stirring events of the past half century. To such, the following notice of the death of the gallant De Grandpré, will call to mind many reminiscences of the by gone time. Mr. Louis de Grandpré perished victim of his devotedness to the Spanish cause. He fell in the night between 22d and 23d of September last, under the numerous wounds which he received in defending the fort of Baton Rouge. He died with that calm and serenity which only belong to a magnanimous soul, and his last moments have put the seal to the nobility of his character. However profound and durable must have been in so generous a heart, the remembrance of the atrocious persecution which his respectable father had endured in the Spanish service he forgot for a moment that they had spread bitterness and even poison on the decline of his life! He obeyed only the voice of honor, and this valorous creole, resolved to show by his noble devotedness, that the men of his blood never know how to intrigue and betray: but only how to forgive, fight and perish, for the defence of the cause, which they had embraced. That martyr, or rather that model of honor, exhaled his last breath on the 24th September at 2 o'clock A. M., in the 23d year of his life, amidst the regret and groans of his family and numerous friends. His loss was lamented even by the enemies of his government, who gave to his memory public proofs of veneration in funeral solemnities, marked with all the most moving expressions of grief and sorrow.
