Full Text
The Rum Traffic is yielding a fearfully luxuriant harvest of crime and death. The curse wades in blood at noon-day! Its Aceldamas smoke with hot blood. Crime follows crime in quick succession going forth from the rum shops to startle by their frequency and stain by their atrocity. In New York city, the red record of rum's triumphs is continually fresh from the tribute of blood. Suicides, stabbings, delirium tremens, and railroad crushings are frequent. The press teems with the records of these tragedies. And yet legislators and politicians bolster the damnable enginery of all this, and Excise Boards shame the Devil by certifying to its necessity. They may not directly commit these crimes but they place the knife and the torch in the hands of madmen, and are accessaries in the commission of the crimes. The people will see these things by and by in their true light. A righteous indignation will yet blast those who so basely sacrifice the interests confided to their keeping.—Cayuga Chief.
