FRENCH PRIVATEER SUNK.
The last mail brought a confirmation of the account of this event. A letter from on board the Montezuma, dated lat. 30, long. 63, Feb. 23, 1799, states " that Commodore Barry, of the frigate United States, has been so fortunate as to reach a French privateer with his heavy metal, and sunk her ; and had just time enough to run alongside, and save 60 men, which he attempted to send ashore at Basse-terre, Guadaloupe, by hoisting a flag of truce, but it being fired on, the benevolent design was given up."
Other letters make mention of this fact.-The Commodore fired but three guns, before the picaroon began to sink. Her name was "Le Mour de Patrie."
The French at Guadaloupe -notwithstanding all their piracies, and unjustifiable conduct in every particular, have the folly to be enraged at the capture of the Insurgente, and the sinking of the privateer by Commodore Barry ;-and have carried their insolence so far, as to treat with outrage the officer, Mr. Robinson, who was sent by Capt. Truxtun to negotiate on exchange of prisoners. He, however, effected his business with Gen. Desfourneaux ; and the French prisoners have all sailed for Guadaloupe. About forty Danes, Swedes, &c. are retained who are expected to enter on board the Insurgente ; which at the last dates were ready for sea, having been manned from the various ships and islands.
