Thomas McElligott Will Fill Place Made Vacant By Removal of Officer Daunals
At the meeting of the board of public safety held yesterday afternoon Thomas McElligott was elected a patrolman. He passed one of the finest examinations of the year. Of all the streets he was asked about regarding their location he knew everyone of them, something which the average supernumerary is wonderfully lacking in. Regarding the claim of Joseph Kelly for damages for being knocked down by fire engine horses while going to a fire one day last February City Attorney Kellogg informed the board that the city is not liable, neither is the board. Kelly will now in all probability bring suit against the city. J. J. Cowper filed an application for an appointment as supernumerary police, also J. J. Fitzgerald.
Commissioner Griffin reported that a fire alarm box is absolutely necessary in the neighborhood of Luke street and Sylvan avenue and he recommended that one be placed at that point. The recommendation was carried, so that after many years the people of that neighborhood are at last to have fire protection.
Commissioner Griffin also reported that the committee on pool rooms reported favorably on the matter of granting licenses to all proprietors that had applied. This matter will now go before the board of aldermen.
John Pfeiffer, 31 Abbott avenue, and Edward Nolan, Waterville, were elected to the supernumerary police force. After the usual bills and the payrolls were approved the board adjourned.
Commissioner Minor presided.
