Extract from Captain Hington's narrative, who was made prisoner on the surrender of Riddle's fort, in Kentucky, the 25th of June, and made his escape the 28th.
On the 25th about sunrise a heavy fire was begun on the fort by small arms, which continued without intermission until noon, when it was observed, that a battery of three pounders were erected, on an advantageous spot: The first discharge made such an impression on the fort, that all within were convinced they could not hold out; so a flag was sent out, and the terms agreed to were, that the garrison should surrender themselves prisoners, be permitted to retain their wearing apparel, and conducted safely to a settlement near Detroit, where provisions should be found them until they could raise corn for themselves. As soon as the men had delivered up their arms, the savages began to plunder the fort, stripping the prisoners, and murdering the sick and wounded. The husband was soon parted from his wife, children from their mothers, and the most doleful lamentations took place.
On the 26th, the whites with a party of Indians appeared before Martin's fort, seven miles up Licking river, which surrendered without resistance, on the same terms as the other fort, and the prisoners were in the hands of the enemy when Captain Hington made his escape; who farther adds, that they consisted of a company of regulars from Detroit, under Capt. Byrd, a company of Canadians, thirty tory volunteers, and about 700 Indians from various tribes. Capt. Byrd informed Hington that he had taken the Governour's despatches going down the Ohio, which gave an account that no expedition would be sent into that country this summer, which seemed to elate him much.
The enemy came down Stoney river (or the great Miami) up the Ohio, and Licking, without being discovered.
