Extract of a Letter from Captain John Sherwood, on board the Blenheim Privateer, dated Cowes, Aug. 10.
Our former Success you have undoubtedly heard of, but since our last departure from hence, have met with only English Cruizers and neutral Ships, as Danes, Dutch, Spaniards, Swedes, &c. (not a French Ship I fear afloat) none of whom we cared to meddle with, although I am persuaded most of them were on an illicit Trade with our Enemies; till the 6th Inst. we fell in with the Vrow Maria, of 200 Tons, from St. Eustatia to Amsterdam, laden with Coffee, Cotton, and 700 Hogsheads of Sugar, which we made bold to bring in here, as we have found out the whole Cargo to be French Property, and many more of the same Kind are coming Home.
A fine Trade the Dutchmen drive from the West-Indies: They complain, I find, in those Parts, because our Cruizers there intercept their small Craft, going with Beef, Butter, &c. to the French Islands; and the Dutch have now fitted out two small Ships of War, to cruize against us and protect their Trade with the French; so that we may daily expect to hear of Blows in those Parts. Their Letters from thence, and even those of our Countrymen, who are settled at St. Eustatia, to Holland and France, are filled with the most bitter Invectives against us that are possible to be expressed, as calling us Robbers, Pirates, &c. Nay an English Merchant there (some rebellious Renegado I suppose) in his Letter says, I am ruined by these pyratical Robbers the English, in taking my Vessels bound to Martinico; and hopes that the States of Holland will redress their Grievances, and recommend to them the Method of curbing English Insolence, by sending a Fleet of 70 or 80 Sail to Scotland, with the Pretender.
