14 Frosh Get Letters At Morehouse
Fourteen freshmen in Morehouse College won their numerals in football and basketball this year, and were honored at the "M" Day exercises which were held on the college campus last Friday. Five men won numerals in two sports. In all, ten numerals were conferred in basketball, and nine in football.
The five freshmen who won their spurs in both basketball and football were Sloan Blocker, of Atlanta; Cassius Ward, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Edward E. Wilson, of Amsterdam, New York; Daniel Smith, of Lexington, Kentucky, and David Adams, of Atlanta. The other freshmen to receive numerals were Joseph Phinzee and William Puoh, of Atlanta; Matthew Carter, of Massilon, Ohio, and William D Myles, of Detroit. The men who won their numerals in basketball alone were Madison Lee, of West Point, Georgia; Arthur Williams, St. Paul, Minnesota; John D. Lewis, Raleigh, North Carolina; Dell Jenkins, Chicago, Illinois, and James Liggett, Chicago, Illinois.
Four of the men who received their numerals for a freshman sport were also recipients of their first Morehouse "M's" which are given for successful participation in a varsity sport. The men who made their varsity letters in their first year at Morehouse are Madison Lee, Matthew Carter, and John D. Lewis in track and William Myles in basketball.
