School For Agricultural Workers Open July
Government To Cooperate In A. U. Course
One of the many opportunities at the 1940 summer session of Atlanta University will be the School for Agricultural Workers to be conducted under the auspices of the United States Department of Agriculture July 1-4.
The purpose of the school is to provide a better understanding of agricultural programs and policies to stimulate thinking on social and economic problems that are concerned with the present state of agriculture; and to help prepare leaders for county agricultural planning activity.
With a selected staff of lecturers the school will use for its theme: "What Is a Desirable National Agricultural Program?" Speakers will be Carl F. Taeusch, of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics U. S. Department of Agriculture, who serves as director of the schools; Charles S. Johnson, department of social science, Fisk University; Abram L. Harris, department of economics, Howard University; Ralph Borsod, School of Living, New York City; Doxey Wilkerson, department of sociology, Howard University; Felix J. Underwood, State Board of Health, Mississippi; and James O. Howard, Bureau of Agricultural Economics, U. S. Department of Agriculture who is cooperating with President Rufus E. Clement of Atlanta University in the organization of the Georgia school.
The fundamental principle governing the meeting is that a desirable national agricultural program can be achieved only by a general democratic participation in its formulation, and that only by allowing honest criticism to be freely offered can the program be satisfactorily administered.
Three lectures will be given each morning, and in the afternoon those attending the school will meet in small discussion groups to discuss the problems presented by the speakers.
