What is this article about?

Chinese miners have assumed control of sections of the American River's North and Middle Forks near the junction, employing flumes and wing dams to mine. They are constructing a 1200-foot flume over a previously unworked deep hole, anticipating rich yields. Their lower costs and satisfaction with modest returns contribute to greater success than white miners, with 300-400 active in a one-mile area.

River Fluming

Portions of the American river seem to be abandoned by white miners altogether, and to have passed into the hands of the Chinese. At the present time, the North Fork, from the Yankee Jim's Turnpike bridge to the mouth, a distance of nearly a mile, is exclusively worked by Chinamen. They have turned the river by means of flumes and wing dams, and all of the companies are now washing dirt.

Above the junction on the Middle Fork there are several flumes owned by Chinamen, and immediately below the junction they have about completed a flume, some 1200 feet in length, that as a specimen of workmanship will compare with the best of those erected by American miners. This flume extends over a long, deep hole in the river, never before worked, and the Johns are sanguine of striking "something rich" when they have turned the river and pumped the water out of the hole.

It is believed the Chinese are more generally successful in their river operations than white men. It is certain their expenses are much less, and they are also content with less pay for their labor.

From the number of flumes and wing dams erected and claims being worked by Chinese, in the vicinity of the "junction," we should estimate from three to four hundred of these people to be at work within the distance of a mile.

Story Details

White miners have abandoned portions of the American River, now worked exclusively by Chinese using flumes and wing dams. A 1200-foot flume is nearly complete over a deep unworked hole, with expectations of rich strikes. Chinese succeed more due to lower expenses and contentment with less pay, with 300-400 working near the junction.
