We hear that Claims have been already made at the Excise-Office for near 4000 Persons sent to the several Bridewells within the Bills of Mortality only, for retailing Spirituous Liquors, for 5 l. each Person; which, pursuant to the late Act, the Commissioners are directed to pay to the Informers out of the 100 l. Penalties incurr'd by those convicted before their Honours for that Offence. And there has been also since the Commencement of the Gin Act, 4595 convicted in the 100 l. Penalties. 'Tis also computed, that upwards of 2000 Persons have paid, on their Convictions before the several Justices within the Bills of Mortality, 10 l. each, to be excused from being sent to Bridewell. So that there has been about 12,000 Persons in all convicted on this Act within the Bills of Mortality only, besides what have been convicted in the whole Kingdom.
