CALEB STRONG,
FOR GOVERNOR.
WILLIAM PHILLIPS,
FOR LIEUT. GOVERNOR.
Freemen of Massachusetts!
YOUR "BANE and ANTIDOTE" are now before you. In a few days you must decide by your ballots, Whether your First and Second Magistrates for the ensuing year, shall be CALEB STRONG and WILLIAM PHILLIPS; or ELBRIDGE GERRY and WILLIAM KING!—That is,—
Whether the destinies of your ancient and once prosperous Commonwealth, shall be directed by statesmen, who have ever been animated by true Patriotism, honest Impartiality, and unwavering attachment to the Constitution; who are lovers of Justice tempered with Mercy, possess constitutional Moderation, and that "Charity which is the bond of perfectness;" or by Men of Partizan Patriotism, and recorded Anti-federalism; men who are fiery Denunciators of their fellow-citizens for exercising their constitutional rights,—the freedom of Speech and of the Press;—Men who have Proscribed the best of Patriots merely for refusing to give them their suffrages; and who have kept, and will still keep, the Commonwealth in a broil!
Such are the Candidates. Choose ye. But it would be an insult on the understandings and honesty of the good Men of Massachusetts to insinuate a doubt of their preference of wholesome Food to sickly Poison. And all that is requisite to ensure the complete consummation of the wishes of Fifty-Thousand of the independent Electors in the election of STRONG and PHILLIPS, and thus to restore to Massachusetts the "golden days" when "STRONG was Governor and PHILLIPS Lieutenant Governor;" is, that every Citizen think himself the centre of a circle which he can animate; that he do his duty in the sphere in which it hath pleased God he shall revolve:—That every friend to the regeneration of the Commonwealth, Old and Young, but particularly the latter who have nerves and bones for active exertions, be in EARNEST; beginning the good work immediately in the nearest circles, and extending them with zeal and perseverance until they embrace, animate and influence every inch of the territory of the State. A small spark from the Altar of Patriotism elected in '03, '04, '05. &c. will convoke a flame which will enlighten every part of the State not only to see the contrast between the Times which now are, and the Times which have been; but will give heat and animation to every Patriotic bosom in the union; thousands of which now long for an opportunity to assist in the restoration of his country to the seat of Prosperity and Glory from which she has been thrust by the folly and weakness of bad Men and worse Administrations.
Electors—One and All.
Repair to your duty with your ancient alacrity and spirit. Remember, when the Righteous are in authority the People shall rejoice: Let this consideration invigorate your hearts; and relying on the blessing of Heaven on your patriotic exertions; and animated by the good old motto which in the days of your Washington, and for so long a period afterwards, crowned those exertions with victory, once more
"take The long pull, the STRONG pull, and the pull altogether."
