FOR THE SOLDIERS.

The Christmas Boxes Are on Their Way to Manila.

Special Dispatch to the Standard.

Helena, Oct. 31.-Three large boxes containing Christmas presents for many of the volunteers of the 1st Montana regiment were shipped from here to-night by express to Assistant Quartermaster Long at San Francisco, to be sent to Manila on the transport that is announced to sail for the orient Friday or Saturday. Telegraphic permission was received last night from Quartermaster Long to send 200 pounds from here. The boxes sent weigh nearly 300 pounds, but it is believed that the government will be liberal and allow the excess. The local division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, assisted by Mrs. G. F. Bryan and many others, engineered the shipment. Packages were received here from a number of other points in the state, including Anaconda, for loved ones in the far-away Pacific. Hardly a week was devoted to the collection of the gifts. If more time had been available at least 1,000 pounds would have been made up for shipment from here. No gifts consisting of what might be termed contraband articles were accepted, and the hope is entertained that Quartermaster Long will not throw a single package out because the instructions as to what could be sent had not been followed. The boxes were consigned to Daniel Hanly of L company, a leading member of the A. O. H., and to Major John R. Miller. At least one-quarter of the members of the regiment will be made happy when the reminders from loved ones sent to-night reach their destination.
