ADAMS MEETING IN HAMPTON.

At a meeting of a number of freeholders of the county of Elizabeth City and town of Hampton, held at the Court House in said town, on Friday the 27th day of August, 1824, for the purpose of taking into consideration the selection of a candidate for the office of President of the U. States,

Gen. B. W. Pryor was called to the chair, and Dr. W. M. Horne appointed Secretary.

The following preamble and resolutions, submitted by Mr. WM. J. Simpkins, were adopted:

Aware that the form of government, which blends as much as possible, the interests of the governors and governed, will be best administered and productive of the greatest happiness to the people; and being convinced that the only method of perpetuating it free from corruption, is by reserving the exercise of the sovereign power to those to whom the Constitution of the United States has confided it; and acknowledging no right but that which is inherently centered in the people, to choose who shall preside over them; a right which they cannot delegate to any other power; a right which it would be treason for any other power to deprive them of, and being opposed from principle as well as expediency to the caucus system generally, and more particularly when that caucus consists of a lean minority of the representatives of the people, which we can view in no other light than as an unwarrantable usurpation of power by the few to dictate to the many. Therefore as a free and deliberate expression of the sentiments of this meeting,

Resolved, That the claims of John Q. Adams to the Presidency, founded on his eminent public services, during a period of 30 years, and on his strict integrity, tried patriotism, and constant devotion to the best interests of the country, entitle him, more than any other candidate, to our confidence and support.

Resolved, That we have full confidence in the republican principles, political experience, zeal and fidelity of John Q. Adams, which, added to splendid talents, and a thorough knowledge of the foreign relations and internal concerns of the U. S. amply qualify him for filling the important office of Chief Magistrate of a great nation--we therefore recommend him to the people of this district, and pledge ourselves to use all fair and honorable means to insure his election.

Resolved, That Robert Lively be recommended to the people as an elector for this district.

Resolved, That the Rev. Richard Gilman, Geo. Hope, Sen. Gill Armistead, Dr. William Hope, Thomas W. Lowry, Dr. Geo. P. French, Wm. J. Simpkins, and Thomas B. Allen, be a corresponding committee to communicate with other corresponding committees throughout the State.

Resolved, That these proceedings be published in the Norfolk Herald and American Beacon.

B. W. PRYOR, Ch'n.
WM. HORNE, Sec'y.
