CHINESE AFFAIRS.

The last London Watchman (of the 13th ult.) in the conclusion of an article which stigmatizes the quarrel with China as disgraceful; its operations and principles as essentially little, and sullying to the reputation of the nation; and which treats Capt. Elliott, with merciless severity, says, "Providence may, doubtless avail itself of all these consequences of human infirmity to bring China more completely under British influence, with a view to the introduction of Christian civilization and its attendant blessings. We need not say that if that consummation could only be purchased by blood shed like water, it would not be too dearly bought. But who will demonstrate that alternative? As men and Christians, we have no right to 'do evil that good may come;' nor even if it should ultimately prove the fact, that the Almighty will educe good out of evil, will that be any proof of his approbation of the war, in which as it appears to us, England has wantonly and wickedly engaged."
