U. S. Budget to be Pruned

Washington, Oct 19-INS

A stiff demand for drastic pruning of every federal budget request for the 1944-45 fiscal year came today from both Democrats and Republicans in the Senate.

Heading the list was Sen Byrd (D) Va., chairman of the Senate Committee on Nonessential Expenditures.

"We are going further into the matter of personnel," Byrd said. "I am convinced that every department and bureau head can get along with fewer employees. The responsibility for waste, in personnel, equipment and material rests squarely on them.

Too many things are being done in the guise of the war effort"
