The Memorial Day holiday, long recognized as the beginning of the summer season for the county's recreational activities, failed to have the cooperation of the weather this year with intermittent rain and cool weather restricting many outdoor activities.
Lake property owners reported cottage reservations running about normal for this time of year, but an unusually few boats were in evidence over the long holiday period and picnickers enjoyed their lunches under mostly threatening skies.
Memorial Day services in several towns of the county proceeded on schedule, however, with the usual parade in Oakland Monday morning, followed by services at the cemetery by the American Legion and Knights of Pythias.
No fatalities were reported on county highways during the three-day period, in marked contrast to the rest of the nation which as a whole registered one of the highest fatality rates on record.
