Californians Going East.—Scarcely a day passes but what some one comes along bound across the continent to visit their former homes. The train that came up on Saturday brought with it a party from Sonoma and Alameda counties, California, whom we met at the Depot by accident and enjoyed a half hour's pleasant conversation with. They could hardly realize that they were recrossing the same country that they formerly traversed with slow moving ox teams. The elegant Pullman car in which they were snugly quartered, was vastly different from the wagon cover that sheltered them years ago when bound to the golden shores and luxuriant valleys of their adopted homes. Now that the iron bands inseparably unite the two oceans, no old Californian desires to remain any length of time away from the salubrious clime of the Pacific. The novelty of the trip, together with the varied change of scenery, awakens strange and romantic memories of the past in the minds of the Pacific coasters, as they glide rapidly along over a country that but a few months since was a barren, uninhabited waste, with only an occasional emigrant train moving slowly along. Truly wonderful is the change; but Californians appreciate it the more, and are startled at nothing in the panorama of life's shifting scenes. Their education makes them at home everywhere, whether it be before the camp fire in the mountain wilds or in halls of marble where royal wealth and fashion reigns supreme. A great difference is noticeable in the practicability of the men and women traveling east over the fresh completed road and those moving toward the Pacific.
