Full Text

Turkey.—The Sultan of Turkey has ordered one of the great Mosques of Constantinople to be placed at the service of Armenian priests, who have been excommunicated. This liberality and toleration may be well contrasted with the intolerance of the Pope. He will not allow Protestants of any creed or country to have a place for worship within the walls of Rome! He will not allow them to come together in a private house to pray and praise in concert. He sends his police officers to visit the apartments of American citizens residing in Rome, to ascertain if they are guilty of the awful crime of holding social worship in their own rooms. So the Sultan shames the Pope. The principles of religious liberty are making greater progress in Turkey than in the Papal States.

Event Details

The Sultan of Turkey has ordered one of the great Mosques of Constantinople to be placed at the service of Armenian priests, who have been excommunicated. This is contrasted with the Pope's intolerance, refusing Protestants places for worship in Rome, even in private homes, and sending police to check American citizens' apartments for social worship.
