Mr. Snowden: "Citizen" has seasonably shown that his sentiments in favor of Hereditary Government are of many years' standing. He might have been believed if he had said that they grew with his growth, strengthened with his strength, and are the bantlings of his grey hairs.
He has now undertaken to shew how these notions fit with Canal reform. It is proper, in aid of the cause of corrupt governments, that it should be known, that whilst he was a member of the Board of Directors, and whilst he was advocating better terms for the gentleman whose certificates he has published, that he was in fact to be one of the contractors himself: this can be proved, if his own word is admitted as proof.
The gentlemen who took the contract had certificates equal in weight and respectability to those published. Unfortunately works do not always correspond with certificates. It must however, be admitted, that if the Steam Engine which were bought for this work had not been lost in the voyage from New York, the issue might have been very different: this loss had a very unfortunate bearing on the subsequent efforts of the contractors.
