Full Text
"Rutledge's Letters to the President of the United States," have undergone thorough examination since their appearance in public. Gentlemen of both parties have attentively compared them with the hand-writing of the Hon. John Rutledge, Member of Congress. —The Editor has noted the remarks made by almost every person during their examination—Very few have denied the great similitude of hands. Very many have declared that they had no doubts on their minds that the hand-writing of the forged letters and Mr. Rutledge's hand-writing exhibited in his acknowledged letters & notes, were the same. Many are desirous to meet the Depositions given in the Mercury, with counter-depositions; but others judge that the proper moment has not yet arrived. It is somewhat remarkable, that the federalists generally admit the similitude of hands, but cannot persuade themselves that Mr. Rutledge could descend to so base an act; and that the candor universally suppose him justly implicated.
