Portsmouth, May 25.

Extract of a letter from Mr. Mendes, merchant at Martinico, dated the 23d of April, to his son in this town.

"Our fleet commanded by Count de Grasse, have had three of the most bloody actions with Admiral Rodney; a great many men have been killed and wounded on both sides; we lost only one ship called the Glorieux, to which we were obliged to set fire after the last engagement ; the British lost 5 ships burnt and sunk,--This glorious event will be remembered as one of the most bloody actions that has been for many years.---The actions were fought off Grande Anse, Dominica, the 9th, 10th,-and 13th instant ; after which, the French fleet proceeded to St. Domingo."
