A large audience assembled last evening at Rev. Mr. Wallace's church to witness the ordination of Messrs. Ray, and Brickett, ministers without pastoral charge.
The order of exercises was announced by the moderator of the council, Rev. Mr. Savage of Bedford, and the minutes of the council were read by Rev. Mr. Adams of the Franklin St. church.
The sermon was by Rev. Prof. Putnam of Dartmouth College, who took for his text, 1 Tim. 3:1: "If a man desire the office of a Bishop, he desireth a good work." We cannot give any abstract which would do it justice. Some of the leading ideas were: The preacher's office is an exalted one, 1st, because it has an exalted object; 2nd, because it has to do with man's noblest (the immortal) part; 3d, because it has to do with the most exalted ideas— The discourse was an able vindication of the gospel ministry as being a worthy field for the most brilliant genius and the most profound scholarship.
Rev. Mr. Willey of Goffstown, offered the ordaining prayer, Rev. Mr. Savage gave the charge, and Rev. Mr. Wallace the right hand of fellowship.
