Full Text

Extract of a letter from Disley, in Cheshire, Jan. 31.

"Thank God the frost is gone, or I do not know what would have become of us. We have had a vast deal of snow, and wanted the snow shoes of the Icelanders to enable us to look after our sheep. Near Buxton a man was found dead; the Chesterfield postboy was lost in the snow; and at Kettlesham some cottagers had their doors blocked up, and burnt their bedstocks before they were relieved. The London stage, that used to carry eighteen passengers, came to Macclesfield without one person in it, after having been dug out of the snow by labourers. Our roads were opened at the expense of the worthy Mr. Wright. But the poor birds have suffered most; last Tuesday two crows fell upon a magpie, which they killed and devoured in the sight of many people."
