Conch Tennis Team Places 2nd In Gold Coast Tourney; Miami Netters Are Victors In Play
Key West's boys' tennis team placed second and the girls' team third in the Gold Coast Conference tennis tournament held in Hollywood over the weekend.
Miami Beach, with one of the best tennis high school teams in the state took first place for the boys and also placed first with the girls' team. South Broward was second in the boys play.
Miss E. A. Reynolds and Harvey Sellers, who accompanied the teams, said the Conchs played excellent tennis.
In the first round of play for the boys Nolan Drudge was eliminated by Curley's Number 1 man, Michaels. Johnny Sellers and Henry Cleare played successfully through the first and second rounds but were eliminated in the third round.
In the doubles, Al Yates and Duane Demeritt were defeated by the Beach's No. 1 team and the Key West combination of Sellers and Cleare were defeated by the Typhoons No. 2 team.
In the girls' play, Sandra Kemp and Sandra Duane were defeated in the first round of play. Peggy Jordan was eliminated by Miami Beach's Sodman in the second round and Marlene Carbonell fell victim to the Beach's number 1 girl Jermain in the second round.
Kemp and Carbonell were eliminated in the second round of the girls doubles by the Miami Beach No. 1 team and Peggy Jordan and Sandra Duane were defeated by the Beach's No. 2 team 7 - 5, 7 - 5.
