On Tuesday evening last a man by the name of Foote was taken up at Newbury on suspicion of Theft. He has been lurking about here for some time past and has threatened the lives of any who should attempt to take him. On Tuesday a house where he has frequented was searched by an officer but he could not be found. About eleven in the evening, however, an officer with several assistants entered the house with a lanthorn, found him asleep on a bed with an axe lying by the bedside, and a large club in his hand, and on finding himself taken he exerted himself but was finally overpowered, but not till he had stabbed the officer in each side with a sharp knife, providentially the wounds are not dangerous--he was finally secured in gaol, several articles were found, which were supposed to be stolen by him, a horse was found tied in a pasture at a little distance, which was doubtles put there by him as no person is yet found to own him.
