Arrived his majesty's brig Childers, Captain Crawford, from the squadron under the command of Sir Edward Pellew, off Rochfort. On the 11th inst. near Sables d'Olonnes, she fell in with a convoy of French vessels, in charge of a brig of war and a schooner, which on perceiving the Childers, took shelter under the batteries of that place. The Childers, in attempting to cut them off from the land, was fired at from the batteries, a shot from one of which hitting one of her guns, killed and wounded some of the men; and though the enemy kept up an incessant fire from the batteries, she succeeded in taking possession of one brig laden with ordnance stores, which she sent for Plymouth. It appears that the attempt to burn the French squadron at Rochfort has been abandoned, they being so well protected by the batteries that it is thought to be hazardous. A new ship, the Hero, of 74 guns, has been lately launched at Rochfort, and has joined the French squadron. Sir Edward Pellew's has suffered some damage in a gale of wind, which lasted from the 5th to the 7th inst.
