Hartford Clergymen Back Goodman's Council Bid

The most important and influential members of the clergy in Hartford went on record here last week in support of the City Council candidacy of George W. Goodman in the fall elections.

Decision of leading ministers to back Mr. Goodman in his bid to be the first of his race to become a member of the Council, was voiced at a luncheon for Negro clergymen of the city Monday afternoon at a luncheon at the home of Mary Parkman Watson.

The luncheon was sponsored by the Non-Partisan Community Organization.

Indication that united support will be forthcoming in the Goodman campaign was seen in the appearance of Dr. Allen F. Jackson, City Council candidate in the last election, who made a strong appeal for a vigorous and concerted effort to elect Goodman.

Dr. Jackson's all-out endorsement of Mr. Goodman, who served as his campaign manager in the last election completely scotched rumors that there would be any significant bid to split the Negro vote and thus lessen chances for race representation.

One of the main purposes of the occasion was to present the organized clergy with an opportunity to outline suggestions and recommendations they felt important in insuring success in the campaign.

Invited as guests were the Reverends J. C. Jackson, A. P. Morris, J. A. Wright, Father A. M. Lambert, I. L. Jefferson, R. A. Moody, G. S. Clark, J. Shields, D. S. Craig, F. D. Coates and L. Jones.

The meeting responded one hundred per cent on the necessity for a single candidate.

Father Lambert emphasized the obligation of the church to take a stand for good government.

Mrs. Watson served a luncheon of tomato cocktail, sliced cold turkey with mushroom gravy, creamed potatoes, garden peas, iced tea, hot rolls, vanilla ice cream and pound cake.
