THE SALES TAX
(Oroville Mercury-Register)
The way some congressmen regard the sales tax one might think they'd rather bankrupt the country than compel those "least able to pay" to ante up regularly in support of it.
These politicians place so much emphasis on their views that the sales tax comes to look like a vicious ogre snapping at the vitals of the common people. One should remember that these same congressmen are about to stand for re-election.
As a matter of fact, the sales tax is right in line with the President's announced policy to tax heavily enough so that the country won't go on a spending spree that would result in inflation. In fact, it is in line but hardly drastic enough to achieve the desired result.
Establish a sales tax that, like the one in California, would avoid food, and it would not work a hardship. There is hardly a buyer who could not do without enough each day without noticing it to pay the sales tax on what he was forced to buy. We haven't yet got down to the point where we are depriving ourselves of much.
On the other hand, the sales tax would bring in a great flood of taxes, just as it has in California, and it might result in saving our country from most serious consequences.
