Maxwell, Preller's murderer, clings to life with feverish tenacity. Everything has been done by his friends to secure a commutation of his sentence, or a rehearing of his case, but all to no purpose. His father who has once made the trip from England to this country in his son's behalf, arrived in New York yesterday for the second time to see if anything can be done to save his unfortunate son's life.

The story of Maxwell's terrible crime in murdering his friend and packing the remains into a trunk, and of his capture in Australia is well known. His actions all through have been those of a man suffering from some form of insanity. Governor Morehouse has thus far refused to interfere with the execution.
