Mr. Geo. D. Stevens, assistant cashier of the First National Bank, thinks there is little inducement for early rising. On Wednesday morning he got up with the lark, came down to the bank and threw open the windows, in order to let a little May-day air into the rooms. He then hitched up his team and drove over to East St. Johnsbury, returning about half-past eight o'clock, to find a crowd of persons out behind the bank, looking earnestly at the open windows and examining carefully for tracks. A few words explained matters: On getting up in the morning, the neighbors saw the bank iron shutters open - an unusual thing. They at once recalled the fact that about two o'clock in the night there was the report of fire-arms; and putting the two together, they supposed burglars had attempted to rob the bank, and had discharged the burglar alarm which hangs upon the outside of the building. Mr. Stevens assured them that he was the innocent cause of all this undue excitement, and on going into the bank, the chronometers were found ticking away upon the vault door, holding everything safe, even against the cashier, until the hour of 9:30 should arrive the hour for which the time lock is set to open the vault.
