THE EXCITEMENT IN NEW CASTLE AND
DELAWARE CITY THAT
A
MAD DOG
CAUSED.
Special correspondence of the Gazette.
New Castle, December 3.-A large gaunt fox hound, white in color, with brown spots upon him, and with his throat bleeding, as though a load of shot had been lodged in his neck, found his way into the bar room of Mr. B. D. Longland's Delaware House here, early yesterday morning, and acted strangely.
Later in the day the same dog appeared in the neighborhood of Delaware City, and created a great deal of excitement there by biting everything it met.
The animal was frothing at the mouth and acted exactly as a dog suffering from the rabies would act. It bit quite a number of dogs, among them dogs of Atkins Pennington, Wm. Morris and Samuel Armstrong.
After he had been in the apartment for sometime Benjamin Johnson, the bar tender, kicked him upon the porch where he laid down and remained, until driven away. Parties who saw him about the city afterward say he had symptoms of hydrophobia.
But the most serious phase of all was the biting of Mr. Richard Alexander a carriage maker near Delaware City. The dog sprang upon Mr. Alexander and inflicted a deep wound in his cheek.
The residents in that locality, thoroughly alarmed, now turned out to kill the animal, and finally Mr. John C. Higgins shot it and prevented any further damage. A great deal of excitement exists in Delaware City in consequence of the affair.
