A SENTENCE WELL DESERVED.--The Criminal Court of New York has set an example in respect to the punishing of incendiaries, which, if universally followed, will tend to check a crime so nefarious in its character, and yet believed to be so common, when motives of cupidity tempt to its perpetration. A man, named Dennin, who had an insurance upon his store to a greater amount than the stock it contained when the fire occurred, deliberately prepared to fire it by scattering camphene and other combustibles about the building, and then setting them on fire. Fortunately, the fire was discovered before it made much progress, but the evidences of the criminal intention were plainly manifest. What made the act the more enormous for its wickedness, was the fact that several families were sleeping in the apartments above, whose lives, of course, were thus deliberately endangered by the reckless villany of this criminal. He was indicted, tried and convicted, and the court sentenced him to ten years' imprisonment in Sing Sing. A strict investigation into the causes of every fire, a prompt trial, and punishment in proportion to the enormity of the crime, would tend strongly towards checking a species of villany which has become too common.
