Captain Jacob Lee, from Surinam, has given us the following statement of injurious treatment to one of our seafaring citizens, for which we hope he will meet with redress.
"Left at Surinam, Luther Mildrum, master of the brig Henry, of Hartford, from Buenos Ayres. He had landed from said brig in the river Mariwena, taking it to be Surinam, and was there made a prisoner by an officer commanding a Dutch post, and transported through the country by a military escort to Surinam, at which place he was put into prison with two of his sailors. The reason of his being made a prisoner was, that one of his crew got in liquor, and informed the officer that he had false papers, and had rogues on board; on which he immediately showed his papers to the officer, who could read and talk English as well as he could; but notwithstanding all he could say, he persisted in detaining him a prisoner, and sent him to Paramaribo, where he had a trial, and was turned into the street, destitute of money or clothing, except what he stood in. But the government never saw his papers, nor even asked for them. The brig Henry is not to be heard from on the coast; she has departed, God only knows where, destitute of papers on board, &c."
