"Promote as an object of primary importance
institutions for the general diffusion of Knowledge.
to
In proportion as the structure of government gives
force to public opinion. it is essential that public
opinion should be enlightened." Washington.
THE Providence Phenix will be devoted
to the support of the Constitution and
Constituted Authorities of the Country.
At a time when intrigue has become fash-
ionable, when parties and factions are using
every art to thwart the delegated will of the
nation, and substitute the will of an aspiring mi-
nority therefor, and thus sway the nation by
undue influence; it becomes the part of every
real friend to the constitution, to use his best
endeavors that all the sources of communication
be not corrupted.-That all the papers of the
day be not devoted to any one party, and thus
become the means of raising unnecessary anxie-
ties & alarms in the minds of the people, to the
prejudice of the peace and happiness of society.
* It is too apt to be the case, that a few de-
signing men, by their great exertions and decep-
tion, govern the will of the many, and thus carve
out to themselves, exclusively. places of power
and profit. This they do behind the curtain,
while the many are ignorant of the real inten-
tions and maneuvers of the few.
The only means by which a free people
will prevent deception in this way, will be by
seeking information from all quarters,. and
thinking deliberately, in forming the result of
their judgments. By these means, every person
will not be deceived by every wind that wafts a
deleterious vapor from the fountain of deception.
The Providence Phenix, is not esta-
blished for the purpose of diffusing scandal and
falsehood through society, but for the detection
thereof.
The proprietors of the Paper, pledge them-
selves, to use their best endeavors, to have the
principles therein contained, founded on the
altar of Truth and Justice. It shall be their
constant study to portray all Foreign and Do-
mestic Intelligence and Occurrences, in their
true colours. unbiased by party prejudices. -
The discoveries in the Arts, Sciences, and
Agriculture, will be carefully delineated. Those
who have retired from the bustle of party, and
seek consolation and happiness from reflection.
and the fountain of Science, in the walks of do-
mestic life, will meet with our utmost exertions,
in accommodating some parts of the paper to
their edification.
The Proprietors flatter themselves that every exertion will be made by the Pro-
prietors to render the Paper Amusing and Enter-
taining, as well as instructing.
Some Literary characters having engaged
to render their assistance in making the Paper
agreeable the Proprietors flatter themselves
that they shall meet with a liberal support from
that Candid public, whom they will constantly
endeavor to please.
It is too often the case, that every new Pa-
per which is established for the support of our
present glorious System of Republican Govern-
ment, is immediately cried down as having for
its object Jacobinical and Atheistical Principles,
and a whole category of opprobrious names are
applied thereto, by those persons who fear a
contradiction to the utility of their principles
and schemes of operation. The Proprietors are
sensible they shall meet with great opposition
and persecution. from persons of the above de!
scription ; but they hope and trust the candid
will not condemn unheard, and unseen but
will read and see for themselves, before they
form their opinions, and after they shall have
done this, the Proprietors - flatter themselves,
that the result of the judgment of the Readers
will be favorable to their Paper.

lished on a large and handsome paper, every
Tuesday morning. and delivered to Subscribers
in town as early in the day as possible. Sub-
