To Open Oct. 25
Atlanta University will formally open its new Collection of Contemporary Art on Sunday, October 25, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the new Exhibition Room in Trevor Arnett Library.
The collection, the gift of Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey L. Waddell of New York, consists, among others, of work by Hale Woodruff, Dong Kingman, Isabel Bishop, Charles Alston, B. J. D. Nordfeldt, William Thon, Robert Vickrey, Edwin Dickinson, Jacob Lawrence and Atlanta's George Beattie. President at the opening will be Mr. Dickinson, Mr. Beattie and Mr. Woodruff.
In addition to the new collection, selected works from Atlanta University's Permanent Collection of works by Negro artists will be exhibited. Mr. Woodruff, formerly on the Atlanta University faculty and now at New York University, was among those responsible for starting the Atlanta University annual exhibition of works by Negro artists in 1942. The permanent collection is composed of purchase award from the exhibitions.
