A CONSPIRACY AGAINST OUR LIFE--Last Monday morning an anonymous note was left at our office during our absence, containing a warning to the editor that a cowardly and murderous attack would be perpetrated against us that very day in our own office. Other anonymous threatening letters had been before addressed to us, but we had never paid any serious attention to them. We now called on the chief of police, who hastily dispatched an officer to our sanctum. Yesterday morning the conspiracy was put in operation by two persons, who had received through us some pecuniary assistance only a few days since, and had even applied to our office for employment. Being well aware of the existence of a criminal conspiracy against us, we provided ourselves with defensive weapons, and met the assailants as they deserved. They are now confined in the tombs, and on their trial some new and curious developments will be made. We shall only add here, that, last Sunday, in a low tavern kept by an Italian, (accidentally so by birth,) a few ruffians planned the conspiracy, while one of them brandished a poniard, expressing a wish to use it upon our person. If this is the method our enemies have adopted to compel us to be silent on their infernal policy, we assure them that it will never succeed, unless by the destruction of our mortal existence. We are firm in our principles! We shall stand on our platform, and defend those principles and our person to the last, against any and all the physical force our enemies may employ to silence our free speech and free press! Crusader.
[The Crusader is edited by Mr. Cassali, a very worthy Italian, who is carrying on a vigorous warfare against Popery, and in favor of the rights of the Italian people.--Journal of Commerce.]
