Letters from Washington, dated on Saturday last, announce that Mr. Rose's Mission has terminated in a total failure. It is said, that Mr. Madison has mentioned the fact, without reserve, in various circles; and that the President was expected to send a message to Congress on the subject yesterday.—The information comes from so many gentlemen of different political sentiments, that we are compelled to believe it.
It is also said that there is no probability that the Embargo will be raised before midsummer; and that it will greatly depend on the Commercial states whether it be raised in twelve months. Indeed, it is believed that the Southern and Western States would agree that America abandon the Ocean forever.
In this situation what should the people do? Let the Merchants, in all our Seaport Towns, come forward, at one moment, and as one man, and unite in a strong and spirited remonstrance; and let that remonstrance be signed by every man, who has the least regard for the interests, the honor and the safety of the country.
The honor of the country does not require the sacrifice of its peace, prosperity and commerce.—Peace may be preserved, commerce restored, industry revived, want and misery removed, and our national honor vindicated and supported. Let the people rouse then from their dreams of safety. Let them be up and doing; before it be forever too late.
Shall America renounce her commerce and abandon the Ocean? It is an idle tale. The local situation of our country, and the habits and spirit of its inhabitants, will forever proclaim that we are a commercial nation.
