Full Text

"The dirty work assigned" to Attorney General Akerman was that he should work up the Ku-Klux outrages into shape for aiding Grant's re-election.
The tenure of his office depended upon his success in this undertaking. Accordingly he went into Georgia and the Carolinas and had whole neighborhoods arrested and imprisoned. But, although he played the spy and pettifogger to the utmost of his little ability he utterly failed to make any available political capital. The best he could do he did: that was to show Grant that he possessed meannesses and servility enough for the task, but fell woefully short in the article of brains.
He was appointed to help Grant in the South, but failing, his head went into the basket.
Poor, despised Aker-man.
