IN SENATE—Friday, Jan. 17.

INQUIRY INTO PUBLIC DISTRESS. &c.

The Senate resumed the consideration of Mr. Clay's resolution, proposing an inquiry into the expediency of extending the time of payment of Merchants' Bonds or Duties.

On motion of Mr. Ewing, the Senate adjourned, to meet on Monday.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

The resolution offered by Mr. Chilton on the subject of extending the pension system, so as to include those engaged in the Indian wars on the frontier, together with Mr. Loundin's amendment thereto, coming up again, as the morning business,

Mr. Peyton, of Tennessee, resumed and concluded his remarks in support of the amendment and was followed in opposition by Mr. Pinckney, of South Carolina.

Mr. Burgess, by leave, proceeded to make a brief reply to Mr. Peyton, (which excited much merriment in the House.)

The House non-concurred in the Senate's amendments of the general appropriation bill—yeas 70, nays 112.

The use of the Hall, on Monday evening next, was granted to the Colonization Society.
And then the House adjourned to Monday.
