Injustice to the Indians.
Among the intricate workings of the different Indian Agencies there generally hangs an undefined crookedness, and the Papago reservation, south of Tucson, seems to be no exception to the common rule, only, if reports are true, the high-handed measures taken on that reservation to dispossess the hereditary owners of the soil are almost without precedent.
Through scheming and connivance. but how or through whom the mystery is not solved, a woman, said to be sharp and shrewd, a cross breed between a Papago and a Mexican, and now married to a German, has so far succeeded to the management of the entire reservation as to dispossess at will and by force of authority, said to be Governmental, any and all persons having rich and tillable lands, to her own aggrandizement, not even sparing her old Papago mother. The latest victim of her cupidity is the daughter of an old Papago chief who died about fourteen years ago, and who is now married to a Mexican and living as neat a life of civilization as it is possible for an Indian so circumstanced.
Although showing unmistakably the full Indian blood the woman is quite comely in features and dresses as well as many of her Mexican sisters, and speaks the Spanish and Indian languages with equal ease.
The entire reasons given by the controlling power for ejecting her from land which is undeniably hers, is that the woman is so far civilized and has married a Mexican and consequently is no longer entitled to be considered a Papago and so must suffer expulsion, while the expelling power is herself but a half breed and is now married to a German.. But hereafter her pathway is not to be as straight as it has hitherto been as Mr. Ainsa has been consulted as counsellor in the latter case, and will call the attention of the Interior Department to the grossness of the outrages now being perpetrated on a people under the very laws designed for their protection.
