GARFIELD WILL AID PROGRESSIVES.

Cleveland, July 2.—In accepting yesterday the invitation to speak before the new progressive republican organization in Cleveland July 11, James R. Garfield wrote to the organization defining his attitude towards progressive republicanism. He said:

"It is most timely to consider what the progressive movement means and what action it calls for. Those who seek to drive progressives out of the republican party are blind to the conditions and the needs of our people.

"Today political liberty is at stake and the life of the nation is threatened by great special interests which would control our political activities for their own benefit, regardless of the common good. There is no half way ground in the fight of today. Special interests must be driven out of politics and kept out. The progressives of today will win the battle."

The former cabinet officer announced that in his address he'd amplify the attitude of the insurgents as above set forth.
