Atty. David E. Maas, made the following statement last week in St. Croix:
A few of my many friends in St. Croix have just advised me that they have been hearing rumors to the effect that if I were to be appointed Government Secretary, I would take no interest in the development of St. Croix.
Such rumors, I have learned, are being spread about principally by one individual and they are completely untrue and contrary to the facts. For more than ten years I have had an office in St. Croix and I have always been sincerely interested in the development of the economy of St. Croix.
I deeply resent the dissemination of such obvious untruths and am taking this step to deny them only because I want everyone in St. Croix to know of my resentment against such unfounded and untrue rumors.
I have always endeavored to participate in the advancement of St. Croix and its best interest and many of the civic leaders of that island are well familiar with my efforts. I shall always have an interest in St. Croix and the furthering of its interests, whether appointed Government Secretary or not. It is unfortunate that when indicating an interest in the office of Government Secretary some persons must stoop to the spreading of such unfounded untruths in order to defeat another person's candidacy.
