HALIFAX, September 24.

Last Wednesday Capt. Cooper arrived here in 10 Days from Bermudas, by whom we have Advice, that about a Week before he left that Place, Capt. Salter, in the Privateer Schooner Lawrence, belonging to this Place, being on a Cruize a little to the Southward of Bermudas, in a dark Night, found himself under the Lee-quarter, and within Pistol Shot of a large Ship, which he, taking to be a French Indiaman, kept Sight of 'till the next Morning, when he fired his Bow Chase at her, which took Effect among the Glass & Gingerbread Work, the Ship not being able to bring her Broadside to bear upon the Lawrence, and She continuing the Chase for some Time, espy'd 3 other Vessels bearing down for the ship, one of which was Capt. Knox, of this place, with whom Capt. Salter agreed to attack her, both together; but just as they were preparing for the Attack, she knock'd open her lower ports, and show'd her Ground Tier of Teeth, which made them glad to leave her, she being a French 64 Gun ship.

Capt. Salter in the privateer Lawrence spots a large ship at night south of Bermudas, mistakes it for a French Indiaman, follows and fires on it next morning. Unable to bring broadside, the ship chases. Salter spots three vessels, including Capt. Knox, agrees to joint attack, but the ship reveals its 64 guns, forcing retreat.
