The population of Cuba is supposed to be 1,600,000, or about three-fifths the number of the people of Massachusetts, while its area is something less than that of the State of Maine. These facts are of interest in connection with the fact that Spain has sent over 200,000 soldiers to the island in its vain attempt to reduce the insurrection, and is supposed to have 140,000 troops on the island at the present time. That Spain, with all these troops at her command, is not only unable to win back the territory she has lost, but in addition slowly losing ground day by day, is significant of the power of the Cubans who are struggling for independent existence.
