FACULTY HOLDS MEETING THIS SATURDAY.
When Henderson-Brown College opens its fall session here next Tuesday and Wednesday an enrollment at least equal to that of last year, perhaps more, is expected according to officers of the institution. All things indicate a successful year. There will be only one change in the faculty, H. B. Scott taking the place of L. O. Leach as professor of chemistry in the department of science. Mr. Leach has been granted a leave of absence for one year during which he will complete his course for a degree of doctor of philosophy at Chicago University. Mr. Leach was awarded a fellowship in the Chicago institution. Mr. Scott is a master of science graduate of Emory University, Atlanta, Ga., where he has taught several years. He also has been a member of the faculty of the University of Tennessee. It is extraordinary that out of a faculty of approximately 30 only one change has taken place. The organization will therefore be practically intact as it functioned so efficiently last year.
President C. L. Hornaday has announced that the entire faculty will meet in the college parlors Saturday of this week-end. Matriculation and classification will begin and proceed through next Tuesday and Wednesday, and the first classes will be heard Thursday morning, September 15.
In the line of student activities, the first will be a reception given by the Y. M. C. A. and Y. W. C. A. Wednesday night. The Gamma Sigma, Upsilon Phi, Garland and Philomathean literary societies will hold receptions Monday night, September 19. The annual church services for the Opening of school will be held at the First M. E. Church, South, Sunday morning, September 18.
The faculty line-up is as follows: Clifford Lee Hornaday, president; Charles A. Evans, biological sciences; P. W. Turrentine, English; D. P. Holmes, Latin; Miss Mildred Sherrod, French; O. E. McKnight, education; Miss Margaret Allison, Spanish; Matt Ellis, social sciences; Robert T. Proctor, history; Miss Mary Sue Mooney, mathematics; J. L. Cannon, Bible; Mrs. R. W. Huie, Jr., librarian; J. H. Rowland, director of athletics; Mrs. J. L. Cross, dean of women; Miss Ellen B. Martin, associate in English; Miss Vada Clois Gullett, physical education for girls; Rev. J. J. Galloway, executive secretary; Mrs. Mary Brummett, secretary to executive secretary; Miss Annie Neal Jones, secretary to the president; Mrs. Paul Jefferson, chaperone; Dr. H. A. Ross, college physician; Mrs. Ethel Kinard, women's nurse; Mrs. M. B. Crocker, men's nurse; H. G. Smith, business manager; Mrs. W. W. Mills, matron men's dormitory; J. B. Garrett, superintendent of buildings.
Conservatory
The Henderson-Brown Conservatory of Fine Arts, which has made such creditable progress during the directorship of Frederick Harwood, has a brilliant outlook again this year. The faculty is the same. Mr. Harwood will head the department of piano and his assistants will be Mrs. Lois McNabb Smith, and Miss Eliza Harris. Mrs. Harwood is head of the department of violin; Miss Lelia Wheeler, voice; Miss Sybil Snell, expression; Miss Gullett, assistant in expression.
R. T. Proctor, professor of history, is registrar and P. W. Turrentine, head of the department of English, is examiner. Faculty committees are: classification, R. T. Proctor, P. W. Turrentine and D. P. Holmes; advanced standing, P. W. Turrentine and R. T. Proctor; library, Mrs. R. W. Huie, Jr. and P. W. Turrentine; debate Matt Ellis and P. W. Turrentine; scholarship and medals, Miss Mary Sue Mooney and Miss Mildred Sherrod; public occasions, Frederick Harwood and Miss Lelia Wheeler; commencement, Miss Mooney and Matt Ellis; publications, P. W. Turrentine.
