A first class scamp is S. S. Waters who has been burrowing near Chambersville, in this county. He has been "operating" in stock, and everything he could lay his hands on. He got a lot of stock from Mr. Evans and others, which he disposed of, and came to Carthage and bought a wagon from Mr. Yost, and gave a chattel mortgage therefor, on the wagon and team. His actions were suspicious, and he was "shadowed," and was known to have put out for Arkansas. Constable Osborn, of Lincoln township, followed the absconding scamp, and overtook him at Van Buren, Ark. The Sheriff of the county sent two deputies with Osburn, and they surprised Walters in camp near Van Buren. The deputies undertook to make the arrest, when Walters fired on the officers. The Sheriff returned the fire and emptied his revolver two or three times. It was supposed that Walters was mortally wounded, for they tracked him, by the blood, some distance but for some reason, gave up the chase, without arresting the desperado. Several balls passed through the Sheriff's clothing, but did not wound him.
The property was all reclaimed, including wagon, four horses, etc. This Walters used to live in Barry county, and was considered a hard case. He had, it is said, many confederates, and operated in this State, Arkansas, etc.—[Carthage Patriot.
