Full Text

Some of our exchange papers say that Mr. Calhoun has made overtures to Mr. Clay to abandon his American System, and he will abandon Nullification—or, in other words, it is rumored that Mr. Calhoun has agreed to suspend the Ordinance of Nullification in case Mr. Clay will use his influence, or pledge himself that the tariff shall be gradually reduced to the wants of the government. Truly, these great men do well to bargain away the "reserved" rights of the people. The acts and ordinance of nullification must be a mere bagatelle if John C. Calhoun, Gov. Hayne and Gen. Hamilton have power to suspend their operation at pleasure!
